Anaya, Terry named to preseason all-conference team
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (BGSU Strategic Communications) – The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team has been picked to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference race in the 2024 season. The preseason poll, the result of voting by the conference's nine head coaches, was released by the league office on Monday afternoon (Aug.19).
The league office also announced the Preseason All-MVC Team, which included a pair of Falcons. Senior Alberto Anaya and junior Trace Terry each were named to the team.
Missouri State was picked to win the league title in 2024. The Bears earned 74 points along with three of the nine first-place votes.
Western Michigan received four first-place votes and 72 points, while UIC garnered 69 points and the other two first-place votes. The Falcons tallied 51 points.
Belmont was tabbed to finish fourth, with Northern Illinois, Evansville, Drake and Bradley rounding out the poll.
The Falcons return 17 of the 20 players who saw action last season, including nine starters. Anaya and Terry each earned All-MVC honors after tying for the team scoring lead in 2023.
Anaya, a native of Queretaro, Mexico (ITESM Leon), was named to the All-MVC First Team in 2023, and was also named to the United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Third Team. He tied for the BGSU lead in goals, assists and points, despite missing three matches due to injury. The midfielder's total of 14 points included four goals and six assists. A team captain in 2023 (and again in 2024), he scored 12 of his points in conference contests, with all four of his goals and four assists coming against MVC foes. Anaya scored a goal in four consecutive games, the longest streak by a Falcon since 2005. He saw action in seven MVC matches, and had at least one point in six of them. Anaya enters his senior season with career totals of 38 points on 12 goals and 14 assists in the Orange and Brown.
Terry, who hails from Bellbrook, Ohio (Bellbrook), was named to the All-MVC Second Team in his sophomore season. He started all 18 matches and tied with Anaya for the team lead in goals (four), assists (six) and points (14) a year ago. Terry exploded for nine of those points in back-to-back wins at Cochrane Stadium, with two goals against Bradley, followed by two more goals and an assist against Evansville. Terry led the Falcons in both total shot attempts (40) and shots on goal (18) in 2023. In MVC matches, he was second on the club with 11 points, including four goals to tie Anaya for the team lead in that category. Overall, Terry more than tripled his 2022 point total in '23.
The Falcons begin the regular-season schedule on Friday evening (Aug. 23), when Wright State comes to Cochrane Stadium for the teams' annual Battle for the I-75 Cup. First touch is at 7:00 p.m., and admission is free.
BGSU finished the 2023 season with an overall record of 7-8-3, and the Falcons went 4-4-0 in their inaugural season in the MVC, placing fourth in the nine-team league.
