Junior goalkeeper stopped 15 of 17 shots in season's opening week
ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Bowling Green State University men's soccer standout Enzo Gil has been named Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week. The league office made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 26). Gil earns the MVC weekly honor for the first time in his BGSU career.
Gil, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, tied his career high with seven saves in BGSU's season-opening match vs. IU Indy at Cochrane Stadium on Thursday night (Aug. 21). Three nights later, the junior transfer from Lindenwood University set a new career standard with eight stops vs. Butler on Sunday night (Aug. 24).
Through one week of the regular season, Gil leads the MVC and ranks third in the country in saves per game (7.50). He also leads the conference in total saves (15) and ranks second in the league in save percentage (.882).
Gil and the Falcons return to action on Thursday evening (Aug. 28), heading to Dayton to face Wright State. Then, after a Labor Day (Sept. 1) matchup at Michigan, the Falcons will host Michigan State on Friday evening, Sept. 5, at Cochrane Stadium.
