After a superb four-year career on the pitch for the Falcons, Danny Baraldi joins the coaching staff for the 2015 season. Baraldi will serve as a volunteer assistant coach under head coach Eric Nichols this season.
Baraldi scored a total of 57 points, including 18 goals and 21 assists, in 72 matches in the Orange and Brown. He finished his BGSU playing career just one assist and two points shy of moving into the top 10 on each of those school career lists. Baraldi was the first Falcon in 15 years to post a double-digit point total in all four seasons.
Baraldi, a native of Canton, Ohio, burst onto the scene in his freshman year of 2011. He led the Falcons in goals (five), assists (eight) and points (18) and was named to the OCSA All-Ohio First Team. He led all freshmen in the country in both total assists and assists per game (0.44), and was directly involved in the scoring of 13 of BGSU's 22 goals on the season.
His first collegiate goal came in his first collegiate match, as he scored in the 64th minute against then-#9 Michigan in a BGSU win at Cochrane Field. For his efforts against the Wolverines, Baraldi was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. That goal, the first of the match, held up as the game-winning marker in a 2-0 victory, and he also scored the winning goal in a 1-0 win at Pittsburgh. Baraldi had a six-game point-scoring streak that season, the longest by a BGSU player in over a decade.Â
In his sophomore season, Baraldi became BGSU's first all-region selection in 11 years, as he was named to the All-Great Lakes Region Third Team by the NSCAA. He also was an All-MAC First-Team selection, and was named to the All-Ohio Second Team by the OCSA. Baraldi scored 19 points on six goals and a team-leading seven asists. For the second-straight season, he scored the Falcons' first goal of the year and saw it hold up as the game winner, finding the back of the net in the season opener vs. St. Bonaventure. He was named the MAC Player of the Week in mid-September after a two-goal game on the road vs. nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina.
As a junior in 2013, Baraldi scored 10 points and was named to the All-MAC Second Team. His point total included a five-point night in a blowout win over IPFW late in the season. He had a career-best three assists in that game, and both his assist and point totals were the highest by a MAC player during the entire 2013 season. A team-tri captain in 2014, Baraldi was again named to the All-MAC Second Team, and he earned All-Ohio Second-Team honors from the OCSA. For the second-straight season, he scored 10 points.
Baraldi scored goals in each of the first two matches of the 2014 season, both BGSU wins, and he scored the winning goal at IPFW, breaking a scoreless draw with under seven minutes left in the second half. He was injured in the Falcons' win over Western Michigan on Nov. 1, and missed the final two matches of the regular season, but he returned to the field for the MAC Tournament, coming off the bench to play in both the West Virginia (Nov. 14) and Akron (Nov. 16) matches as BGSU advanced to the league tourney final for the first time since 2003.
A four-year letterwinner at Jackson H.S., he was an NSCAA All-American for the Polar Bears as a senior in the fall of 2010, and also earned All-Ohio First-Team honors that year. Baraldi was the Stark County Player of the Year and the district P-O-Y after setting the school single-season record with 24 goals, and he also was the Federal League P-O-Y and earned all-league honors for the third-consecutive year. Jackson advanced to the state finals in Baraldi's freshman season, and to the elite eight in each of the next three years. He had a career total of 47 goals and 36 assists at JHS.
Baraldi, the son of Michael and Regina Baraldi, is the youngest of three boys. His brother, Tony, played collegiate soccer at Cleveland State.
