Greg Hennelly enters his third season on the BGSU men’s soccer coaching staff in 2014. Head coach Eric Nichols announced the addition of Hennelly, a former Falcon men’s soccer student-athlete, to the staff in March of 2012.
A native of Akron, Ohio, Hennelly also is Director of Coaching for Bowling Green Soccer Club, a club consisting of roughly 100 players.
The Falcons posted a 6-7-6 overall record in 2013, going 2-2-2 in MAC play while again playing a strong non-league schedule. The ‘13 team scored the most goals (25) since 2003, and allowed the fewest goals (17) since the ‘01 campaign.
Nichols, Hennelly and the staff have solidified the Falcons’ defensive corps, as BGSU’s defense has allowed fewer goals than the previous year in every season of the Nichols tenure. The 2012 Falcons had seven shutouts for the second-straight year, and the 2013 team kept eight clean sheets.
BGSU’s team goals-against average of 0.89 was 30th best in the nation in 2013. The Falcons posted the most shutouts (eight) since the 1998 season, and lost the fewest matches (seven) since ‘97.
The 2012 campaign saw the Falcons post eight wins against a tough schedule. BGSU’s 8-9-3 overall mark represented the team’s most wins and highest winning percentage since 2003. The Brown and Orange posted two wins and a tie against teams that advanced to the NCAA Championships.
BGSU went 3-3-1 in the MAC, earning the fourth seed in the eight-team conference and a bid to the league tournament. The Falcons fell on the road to the nation’s top-ranked team in the MAC Tournament’s semifinal round.
In the classroom, the Falcons have received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award in four consecutive seasons, including each of the three years since Hennelly rejoined the program. The award is given to programs that have achieved a minimum team GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Prior to joining BGSC, Hennelly served as assistant director of coaching at the Toledo Football Academy since 2008. His club experience has included coaching multiple teams with players ranging from 5-18 years old, and managing the day-to-day operation of a program which includes over 200 players/family members.
In addition to his work with BGSC and TFA, Hennelly has experience working as a member of the US Soccer Region II staff. In that role, he evaluated players from 12 different states for consideration in the national pool. He also has been a member of the Ohio North Olympic Development Program (ODP), serving as head coach of the State Team.
Hennelly was named the Ohio Youth Soccer Association North (OYSAN) Coach of the Year in 2011. He has his United States Soccer Federation ‘B’ License, and also has a USSF National Youth License.
A graduate of Revere High School, Hennelly played two seasons (2004-05) at BGSU. He saw action in 36 matches for the Falcons, starting 21. A midfielder, he had five points on a pair of goals and an assist in his inaugural season, scoring goals against Ohio State and Western Michigan.
In the 2005 campaign, Hennelly had four points, on goals against Evansville and St. Mary’s (Calif.). The latter goal was the final marker in a 3-1 BGSU win at Cochrane Field.
Hennelly earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from BGSU in 2009. He currently resides in Toledo.
