(On Jan. 17, 2025, Weinshank was named head coach at Greensboro {N.C.} College)
Jacob Weinshank joined the BGSU men's soccer staff in January of 2024. In his first season with the Falcons, he helped the program to one of the most successful seasons in recent memory.
“We are delighted to add Jacob and his wife, Jessie, to Bowling Green,” said head coach Eric Nichols at the time of Weinshank's hiring. “Jacob has a great amount of college coaching experience, both on the field and behind the scenes. Most importantly, he is a tremendous fit culturally for both our program and our community.”
The 2024 season, Weinshank's first on the staff, saw the Falcons finish with an overall record of 12-6-2, BGSU's fifth winning season in the last six years. The Orange and Brown posted a 4-3-1 record in Missouri Valley Conference action, tying for third in the nine-team league, and BGSU then picked up a pair of wins to advance to the MVC Tournament final, before falling in overtime.
The Falcons earned a veritable plethora of individual honors in the '24 campaign. Kyle Cusimano was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-America First Team, with Trace Terry earning second-team honors. It marked the first time in 25 years that BGSU had had an All-American, and the first time in program history that the Falcons boasted two All-Americans in the same season.
Terry also earned All-America accolades from TopDrawerSoccer.com, as he was named to that website's 'Best XI' Third Team.
Cusimano was named the MVC's Defensive Player of the Year, with Terry and Alberto Anaya joining him on the All-MVC First Team. BGSU also had a pair of second-team selections in Brendan Graves and Bennett Painter.
Not surprisingly, Cusimano and Terry had been named to the United Soccer Coaches All-West Region First Team before going on to earn All-America honors. And, Cusimano was named a semifinalist for the 2024 MAC Hermann Trophy, the most coveted individual honor in NCAA Division I soccer. Only 15 players in the nation were named semifinalists.
Graves, Terry and Jake Lane all were named to the MVC's All-Tournament Team, and Lane was the recipient of the MVC Elite 18 Award, which is given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA at the finals site of each of the league's 18 championships.
BGSU led the league with six players named to the MVC's Scholar-Athlete Team in 2024. Lane and Andrew Shaffer made the first team, with Anaya, Cusimano, Graves and Josh Erlandson all chosen to the second team. BG also had six players named to the College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-District Team.
In December of 2024, Terry was chosen by Seattle Sounders FC in the third round of the 2025 MLS SuperDraft. He became the fifth overall Falcon in the Nichols Era, and the second underclassman in three years, to be drafted.
The Falcons went unbeaten at home in 2024, with an overall mark of 8-0-1. That included a 7-0-1 record at Cochrane Stadium along with an additional win in a match that was moved indoors due to weather and field conditions.
Weinshank joined the Falcons after spending the previous six seasons on the men’s soccer staff at the University of North Florida.
“I am thrilled for this opportunity to contribute to Bowling Green soccer,” said Weinshank at the time of his hiring. “Thank you to Coach Nichols, who has been fantastic during the interview process and so welcoming to me and my family.
“It is exciting to join a program with both a rich history and recent success on the pitch with a great reputation in the college soccer community. I look forward to getting down to work with the student-athletes this spring and doing my part to bring more championships to BGSU.”
Weinshank joined the UNF staff as a volunteer coach in the summer of 2018 and was promoted to assistant coach in the spring of 2019.
While with the Ospreys, Weinshank helped in producing a top-25 victory on the road, as well as the Atlantic Sun Conference’s top goals-against average in back-to-back seasons. He also saw Cormac Begley and Jovoney Brown earn All-ASUN Second-Team honors in the spring 2021 season, while helping Joaquin Acuña take home ASUN All-Freshman honors in the fall of 2021 and LJ Estes earn ASUN First-Team and All-Academic accolades in 2022.
In January of 2023, Weinshank was selected as the Most Valuable Coach at the EXACT Soccer National Showcase Camps as tabbed by aspiring collegiate student-athletes attending the camps throughout the fall and winter season. Athletes attending the camps rated their collegiate instructors, with Weinshank achieving the highest mark.
Prior to UNF, Weinshank served as a college assistant men’s soccer coach at Maine Maritime Academy in 2017-18. He also worked as Head Coach and Assistant Director at Seacoast United Maine. Additionally, Weinshank was the Head Coach of the University of Maine Men’s Club Soccer team in 2016-17 and the Director of the Soccer Program for Camp Skylemar in Naples, Maine, from 2013-15.
His coaching experience also includes a stint as a staff coach at Jacksonville Armada FC from 2018-19.
A 2015 graduate of Salve Regina University with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and anthropology, Weinshank was a four-year starter on the men’s soccer team. Weinshank’s brace in the 2012 conference final helped lead Salve Regina to the 2012 NCAA DIII Tournament and earned him the Offensive Player of the Tournament in the 2012 Commonwealth Coast Conference playoffs. He garnered the Commonwealth Coast Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award (2014) and was selected a NSCAA All-East Region Scholar.
Weinshank graduated with a Master’s degree from the University of Maine in 2017. He holds a United States Soccer Federation National C License.
