"I am excited to join the staff," Gomes said. "I want to thank Coach Mike Jinks for this opportunity. I can't wait to get to work and get the most out of these young men, both on and off the field."
Prior to his time at Central Michigan, Gomes played professionally for both the Washington Redskins and the Detroit Lions after being selected in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He played in 46 career NFL games, registering 55 tackles, six passes defended and an interception.
Gomes played collegiate football under Defensive Coordinator Carl Pelini at the University of Nebraska for two seasons after two standout seasons at City College of San Francisco. During his senior season at Nebraska, he contributed to the top-12 ranked passing, scoring and total defense unit in the country, finishing second on the team with 99 tackles, 51 of which were solo. Gomes added three interceptions and was named honorable mention All-Big 12 by the coaches and media.
At Central Michigan, Gomes' work with the defensive backs contributed to the Chippewas having five different players register an interception during the 2017 season.
A Bay Area native, Gomes attended James Logan High School in Union City, Calif.
