Ryan Kardok, who joined the Bowling Green State University men’s basketball staff as the Video Coordinator in May 2015, was promoted to Director of Basketball Operations prior to the 2016-17 season.
In his current role of Director of Basketball Operations, Kardok's duties include day-to-day administrative operations, such as scheduling and budget, on-campus recruiting and team travel. Kardok enters his fifth overall year on head coach Michael Huger’s staff. The 2019-20 season will mark Kardok’s fourth as Huger’s Director of Basketball Operations.
Kardok and the Falcons experienced an extremely successful season in 2018-19. After the league's preseason poll picked the Falcons to finish last in the MAC, Bowling Green advanced to its first MAC Championship Game appearance in 17 years.
Bowling Green reached a number of milestones in 2018-19, finishing the season 22-12, while going 14-2 at home and 12-6 in conference play. The Falcons won 22 games for the first time since 2001-02, and set a new arena record for the men’s basketball program with 14 home wins. BGSU’s 12 MAC wins were the most for the school since 2001-02.
In 2017-18, Bowling Green finished the campaign with a 16-16 record. The 16-win total marked a three-win improvement from the previous season. Justin Turner scored 492 points to break the school’s freshman scoring record, while Demajeo Wiggins earned Second Team All-MAC honors.
In 2016-17, Kardok’s first year as the Director of Operations, the Falcons posted seven conference wins, which was a two-win improvement from the staff’s first season in 2015-16. Bowling Green also picked up signature wins, as the Falcons beat Toledo for the first time since 2012, while also snapping Akron’s 17-game winning streak over the Falcons.
In Kardok’s first season at BGSU in 2015-16, BGSU picked up wins over No. 5 Kent State and No. 4 Central Michigan over the first two rounds of the 2016 MAC Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament to advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2009.
As the video coordinator in 2015-16, Kardok was in charge of the editing and exchange of both highlight and game files, as well as the filming of daily practices and games. He also worked with the former Director of Basketball Operations Kevin Noon as co-directors of the Michael Huger Basketball Camp.
Prior to coming to BGSU, Kardok was a graduate assistant coach at the University of Miami from 2013-15, where he worked under head coach Jim Larrañaga and with current BGSU head coach Michael Huger.
Kardok helped Miami advance to the 2015 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) Championship Game at Madison Square Garden and to an overall record of 25-13, with the 25 wins being the second most all-time in school history. On the season, the Canes defeated three nationally ranked top 25 teams – at No. 8/7 Florida, vs. No. 24/25 Illinois and at No. 4/4 Duke – with two of those wins over ranked opponents coming on the road for the first time since 1998-99. With the Canes’ win over Duke, the eventual 2015 NCAA Men’s Basketball National Champions, Miami snapped Duke’s home winning streak at 41 games, what was the longest active streak in NCAA Division I history at the time, and the Blue Devils’ ACC home game winning streak at 19. The Canes also ended Florida’s streak of consecutive home wins at 33 straight victories, which was the longest streak in the Gators’ history.
The Parkland, Florida native, played for two seasons at the University of South Florida from 2008-10 where he earned his way on to the team as a walk-on after playing two years at Broward Community College from 2006-08.
Kardok is heavily involved in the community and is involved with a program called Vanguard, in which he helps mentor students on campus. He has a Master's degree from the University of Miami (Fla.) and a Bachelor's degree from the University of South Florida. He is married to Lorianna Kardok.
