Dorothy Luedtke (aka “Bergen”), a 1947 BGSU graduate, was a faculty member in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation from 1948 through 1983. She served as director of the women’s intramural program from 1953 to 1968. Luedtke coached the university’s first women’s intercollegiate swimming, basketball, and volleyball teams. After starting the volleyball team in 1966, the team was undefeated for two straight seasons. She also coached field hockey.
After 33 years on the faculty, she retired in 1984 as an Associate Professor. By the end of her professional career, she had laid the foundation for the nexus between physical education and athletics that preceded the 1976 merger of women’s and men’s athletics programs. In 2003, the BGSU Board of Trustees named a gymnasium in Eppler North in her honor. In 2022, Luedtke was inducted into the MAC hall of fame for her effort and celebration of the Title IX 50 year anniversary.
Luedtke was elected to the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985.
