Fred Durig

Fred Durig came to BGSU after a fine scholastic career at Mansfield Madison High School, where he won seven letters. In 1949, Durig won Freshman numerals as the regular back. He moved into the starting fullback job as a sophomore and gained 262 yards in 50 carries. As a junior, Durig led the nation in rushing with 1,444 yards on 214 carries, with 10 touchdowns. Durig completed his career with 858 yards in his senior season, good for nine touchdowns.
Durig was a first team All-Ohio selection and team MVP in 1951 and 1952. Durig was a 1952 College Division All-American, the first All-American selection in school history and being named All-MAC fo the 1952 season.Â
Fred Durig was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers, but a severe leg injury during the pre-season, ended his career.
In 2019, Durig was inducted to the BGSU cast of honor that honors former student athletes. His name and number is now hanging in Doyt L. Perry Stadium.
Durig was inducted to the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1975.
