John Spengler came to BGSU after lettering in five sports at Toledo Woodward High School in Toledo, Ohio. He was a two-sport letterman at BGSU, earning four awards as a Falcon football placekicker under Coach Denny Stolz and four more in golf under Coach John Piper. Spengler was the first BGSU athlete to earn first-team All-MAC honors in both football and golf in the same year.
In football, Spengler was a soccer-style placekicker, a skill he first developed while attending grade school in England. He set school records as a sophomore, converting 34-of-35 extra point attempts. Spengler then earned first team All-MAC honors his junior and senior seasons, kicking a then school-record 13 straight field goals as a junior. He also completed his collegiate career by kicking 71 consecutive extra points.
In golf, Spengler lettered as a freshman on BG's 1978 MAC Championship team. As a junior, he earned first team all-conference honors by finishing seventh at the MAC Championship. He captained the 1981 squad his senior year and was the team's scoring leader with a 76.1-stroke average.
