MT. PLEASANT, MICH. - Francine Miller scored a career-high 28 points, including 20 in the second half, as the Falcons recorded an 80-69 win at Central Michigan Thursday. The win, BG's first Mid-American Conference victory of the season, snapped a school record-tying seven-game losing streak.
The lead changed hands eight times in the first half, with the Chippewas leading by as many as seven points (19-12) midway through. BGSU, which never led by more than four points in the half, took a three-point lead on a three-pointer by Kim Griech with 29 seconds left. The Falcons would not trail again.
The home team tied the score at 40-all early in the second stanza, but a Miller trey gave BGSU the lead for good. The Falcons took a 10-point lead on a Jaymee Wappes triple at the 9:45 mark, and Central never got closer than five points thereafter.
After the Wappes "three," Miller scored 14 of BG's next 16 points. She made six of the Falcons' last eight field goals of the game, and pulled down 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season, and her fourth in six games.
Angie Farmer joined Miller in double digits with 19 points, while Sherry Kahle had a career-best 14 rebounds. Jaymee Wappes had nine points and seven assists while playing all 40 minutes.
Jodi Culbertson's 16 points paced four Chippewas in double digits.
"Franny had a great second half," said Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch. "She really toughed it out, because she wasn't feeling well (before the game).
"She played great, Sherry (Kahle) had a great rebounding game, and Angie Farmer played just a solid, solid game. Everyone who came off the bench contributed in some way, and we handled the ball better.
"This was a big win for us."
CMU coach Fran Voll, who coached the Falcons for seven years, also had praise for Miller.
"Francine Miller is a tough player," Voll said. "I had her in my office a few years ago (on a recruiting visit). She went to Bowling Green.
"The (BG) kids we knew were gonna be tough were tough. They hit some big shots, but you've gotta defend, and we didn't do that."
