The Bowling Green State University hockey team played even with the fourth-ranked Michigan Wolverines Sunday night at the BGSU Ice Arena for nearly 59 minutes, before Scott Matzka's goal with 78 seconds remaining gave UM a 4-3 win.
Michigan's Josh Langfeld scored 28 seconds into the contest and Jeff Jillson added a power-play goal at the 7:08 mark to stake the Wolverines to a 2-0 lead. Falcon junior center Greg Day (St. Clair Beach, Ontario/Chatham Maroons) tallied a four-on-four goal with 2:43 left in the opening stanza off an assist from sophomore Ryan Fultz (Rochester, Mich./Cleveland Junior Barons).
Langfeld's second goal of the night put UM in front 3-1 23 seconds into the second period. BG started its two-goal rally with Day's second of the game 4:18 into the third period. Day's shorthanded marker was assisted by senior Curtis Valentine (Gansevoort, NY/Capital District Selects). Day completed his hat trick with 5:03 left in regulation off an assist from sophomore Grady Moore (Castlegar, B.C./Penticton Panthers) and Valentine.
Falcon sophomore netminder Tyler Masters (Calgary, ALB/Kindersley Klippers) made 40 saves including 18 in the opening period, while Michigan goaltender Josh Blackburn was credited with 15 saves. The Wolverines scored one power-play goal in six chances, while BG was blanked on its five man-advantage opportunities.
Bowling Green will entertain Alaska Fairbanks in a two-game CCHA series next Friday and Saturday at the BGSU Ice Arena. Face-off both nights is slated for 7:05 p.m.
