ATHENS, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team recorded a four-game win over Ohio University Saturday night (Nov. 11). The Falcons won the Mid-American Conference match (15-17, 15-12, 15-7, 15-11), which was held at Ohio's Convocation Center ("The Convo") in Athens, Ohio.
With the win, the Falcons (now 19-8 overall, 11-6 in MAC play) move into a tie for first place with the Bobcats in the MAC's East Division. Ohio drops to 18-10 overall and 11-6 in the league.
BGSU has now won six consecutive matches, and 10 of the last 11 contests.
The Brown and Orange completed a sweep of the season series with Ohio, having defeated the Bobcats in four games on Oct. 18 at Anderson Arena.
As was the case in that first BGSU-Ohio match, the Bobcats captured the first game Saturday. Ohio rallied from a 14-13 deficit for the 17-15 win. In the second game, BG led by a 2-0 margin, but Ohio forged ahead, 9-6. Then, the Falcons evened the score at nine apiece, and the teams were tied twice more before freshman Nadia Bedricky served the final three points of the game.
The Brown and Orange scored the first seven points of game three, then saw the Bobcats score six-straight points to move within one. But, BGSU scored the next five points, and eight of the next nine to close out the game.
In game four, it was Ohio's turn to take a 7-0 lead, but the Falcons roared back, scoring six of the next seven points. Then, with Ohio holding an 11-9 lead, freshman Susie Norris went back to serve. She served six consecutive points to give BGSU the win.
Senior JoAnna Papageorgiou led the Falcons, statistically speaking. Papageorgiou, who missed a triple-double by two blocks in Friday's four-game win at Miami, missed a triple-double by a single block vs. Ohio. She had 15 kills and nine total blocks to lead the Falcons in each category.
"Pop" also had 11 digs, and she hit .400 on the night to lead the Brown and Orange. BGSU hit .230 as a team, while holding the hosts to a .142 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Kristin Gamby and Norris had 13 and 10 kills, respectively, while junior Shyann Robinson had nine. Junior Caty Rommeck had eight kills and hit .350 on the evening. She also had seven blocks as the Falcons held an 11-7 margin in that department.
Bedricky led the Brown and Orange with 18 digs, while fellow frosh Norris had 15. Rommeck had 12 and Papageorgiou, of course, had 11.
Junior setter Natalie Becker had 47 assists in the victory.
For the hosts, Amber Merrill had 18 kills, while Lori McColl and Kris Whitfield had 15 and 13, respectively. Michelle Gil had a team-best 16 digs, followed by both McColl and Merrill with 13.
BGSU now holds a 38-10 advantage in the all-time series with Ohio, and the Falcons have won the last three matches in the series. BG is now 13-6 all-time in road matches vs. the 'Cats.
An Ohio win would have clinched the East Division for the Bobcats.
The Falcons head to Cleveland State University for a non-conference match Wednesday (Nov. 15), before ending the regular season with a Saturday (Nov. 18) contest at the University at Buffalo. Ohio will host Marshall Saturday in the Bobcats' MAC finale.
