Women's Basketball Falls On Road, 69-59

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Bowling Green women's basketball team suffered a 10-point loss on the road Wednesday (Feb. 2), falling to host Marshall University, 69-59, in Mid-American Conference action.
The Falcons (5-15 overall, 3-7 MAC) took a 2-0 lead on an Afra Smith basket, but never led again. The Thundering Herd (7-14, 1-9) opened up a nine-point lead at 15-6 with five minutes gone. The Falcons got as close as one point, 21-20, six minutes later on a Dana Western three-pointer, but could not equalize.
MU's lead was 10 points at the half, after the Falcons shot just 27.3% from the field in the first 20 minutes. BG got as close as three points in the second half, when a Western layup made the score 41-38 at the 14:08 mark. The Herd, however, went on a 12-4 run to open up an 11-point lead, and MU took its biggest lead of the game moments later. Back-to-back triples by Toni Patillo and Brandy Robertson gave MU a 59-45 edge, and the Falcons never got closer than eight points thereafter.
Smith led the Falcons with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, but the rest of the team combined to shoot just 19-of-61 from the field. Angie Farmer scored 13 points, while Dana Western also hit double digits with 10 markers.
Patillo had a game-high 16 points for the Thundering Herd, while Yashico Stevens had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Au'Yana Ferguson also had 10 boards, as the hosts pulled down 53 caroms for the game.
Sherry Kahle had 10 rebounds for the Falcons, while Farmer had nine.
BGSU begins a four-game homestand Monday (Feb. 7), hosting Northern Illinois University at venerable Anderson Arena in a 7:00 p.m. start.
