BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Sophomore Andrea Genter threw a complete-game six-hitter and freshman Libby Voshell homered as the Bowling Green softball team downed Western Michigan, 4-1, Friday afternoon (March 31). The win completed a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Broncos at the BGSU Softball Field.
With the win, BGSU improved to 14-6 overall and 2-0 in Mid-American Conference play. WMU dropped to 4-15 and 0-2, respectively.
The Falcons scored twice in both the first and second innings. In the first inning, junior Angie Domschot singled and took second on a wild pitch by WMU starter Leah Seffernick. Senior Carmen Hitterdal reached on a bunt hit, as Domschot took third base. Domschot scored on a single by senior Colleen Bates, who leads BG with 13 RBI on the year.
One out later, senior Erin Zwinck legged out an infield single to load the bases, and Nikki Rouhana's sacrifice fly scored Hitterdal.
In the second inning, Voshell led off with a homer to right field, the second round-tripper of her young career. Sophomore Holly Frantz singled, but the next two BG batters hit into fielder's choices. Frantz was erased on an Angie Domschot fielder's choice, and Carmen Hitterdal reached when Seffernick fielded her bunt and threw wildly to second in an attempt to get Domschot. Colleen Bates then singled to apparently load the bases. All three runners attempted to advance when WMU did not call timeout at the end of the play. Domschot scored and Hitterdal took third, but the umpires ruled Bates out for attempting to take second base after the play had ended.
Both teams had chances to score in the next few innings, and combined to leave 20 runners on base in the game (10 apiece). Western Michigan broke Genter's shutout bid in the seventh inning. Alaina Scott led off with a triple, and scored on a one-out single by Melissa Martens.
The Falcons remain at home for a Saturday (April 1) doubleheader vs. defending MAC regular-season champion Northern Illinois (13-12 overall, 2-0 MAC after a Friday sweep of Miami). Game one is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at the BGSU Softball Field.
