Teams return to Meserve for a Wednesday DH
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The University of Toledo captured the opening game of a midweek Mid-American Conference series, posting an 11-3 win over the Bowling Green State University softball team on Tuesday afternoon (April 7) at Meserve Field.
Freshman Izzy Ray had her first career two-RBI game for the Falcons (15-19, 3-10 MAC), driving in her team's first two runs of the contest. Junior Taylor Behrendt was one of five BG players with a hit in the game, and drove in the third run, while classmate Peyton Steffes had a double and scored a run.
The Rockets (11-24, 7-6 MAC) scored four times in the second inning and three times in the third to take command. Payton Pudlowski was 3-for-4 to pace the team's 14-hit attack, while Eli Enriquez had two hits and three RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Mackenzie Krafcik retired the Rockets in order in the first inning, including a strikeout of Samantha Bolding, but the visitors would strike in the second.
• UT's four-run second inning began with singles by Jenna Gober and Payton Pudlowski, but the Falcons got back-to-back force plays, as shortstop Cameron Kaufman twice fielded the ball and threw to Addie Martin at third to retire the lead runner. But, a sharp single by Aubrey Hensley loaded the bases, and Ava Golightly singled up the middle to drive home the game's first run.
• Then, Eli Enriquez followed with a double to the wall in center, scoring all three runners. Bolding then singled to center, but center fielder Peyton Steffes fielded the ball and fired a strike to catcher Ashley Chevalier. Chevalier put the tag on Enriquez at the plate for the third out.
• The third inning saw Gober draw a one-out walk against Alyvia Roth, with a Pudlowski single putting runners at the corners. Kaufman grabbed a popup for the second out, but Payton Abiley singled to drive home a run, and Hensley doubled to score two more teammates.
• BGSU's only baserunner in the first two frames against Katie McDonald had been a first-inning walk by Taylor Behrendt, but Katie Hutter and Hannah Simko began the Falcon third with back-to-back walks. A sac bunt by Steffes moved the runners up 60 feet each, and Izzy Ray's fly ball to center allowed Hutter to tag and score from third.
• The Rockets would answer in the fourth, as a Bolding walk was followed by an Audrey Miller single through the left side. Pudlowski came through with an RBI single with two outs, with with the bases loaded, Avari Sandifer got Abiley to hit a fly ball to left-center for the third out.
• The visitors benefited from a two-out error in the fifth to score three unearned runs and take an 11-1 lead. BG would get two runs in the bottom of the inning, but it would not be enough to extend the game.
• McDonald allowed just one hit – Addie Martin's sharp single to right in the fourth – through the first four innings, but the BG bats came to life in the fifth. Simko led off with a single, and took third on a Steffes double to the fence in center.
• Simko scored on a ground ball by Ray, and Steffes crossed the plate on a single by Behrendt. Hannah Hunt reached on an infield hit to put two runners aboard with one out. But, a hard-hit ball by Kaufman was grabbed by a diving Abiley near third base, and she tagged the bag before throwing to first for a game-ending double play.
• McDonald picked up the win for the Rockets, with Mady Yackee getting the final two outs. Four different pitchers saw action for the Falcons.
• UT's two hurlers threw a total of 93 pitches, including 51 strikes, while BG pitchers fired 112 pitches, including 65 strikes.
• All 11 of the Rockets' runs came with two outs. UT batters went 8-for-13 with two down.
UP NEXT
• The Falcons and Rockets return to Meserve Field on Wednesday (April 8) for a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 p.m.
