CLEVELAND, Ohio - Three Bowling Green men's tennis standouts have been named to the All-Mid-American Conference team, the league office announced Wednesday morning (May 3). BGSU sophomore Vitek Wild was named to the All-MAC First Team, while freshmen Geoff Hiscox and Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo earned all-league second-team honors.
Wild, a native of Prague, Czech Republic, earns first-team laurels after being named to the All-MAC Second Team as a freshman in 1999. Playing primarily at the number-one singles flight, he had an overall record of 21-12 this year, including a MAC record of 4-1. He was named the MAC's Player of the Week on April 26 for his efforts in wins over Eastern Michigan and Toledo in the regular season's final weekend.
In doubles, Wild went 20-15, including a 19-12 record with junior Brandon Gabel. That team went 4-2 in MAC action. With 53 singles wins and 96 combined wins after just two years, Wild is well on his way to shattering the school career records (88 singles wins, 142 combined wins).
Hiscox moved into the lineup at the third singles flight, and went 21-10 overall. He was 3-1 in conference play. In doubles action, the London, Ontario, native posted an overall 21-11 record. In MAC play, he primarily teamed with sophomore Ed Kuresman. Hiscox went 4-2 in league action, including a 3-2 mark with Kuresman.
Like Wild, Hiscox earned MAC Player-of-the-Week honors this year. Hiscox garnered the league award on April 5.
Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo went 22-13 in singles in his inaugural season, tying for the team lead in singles wins. Splitting time between the first and second singles flights, the Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, native had a 5-1 record in MAC action, and went 1-0 in league tournament play.
In doubles action, Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo was 23-9, competing with no fewer than seven different teammates. He went 8-2 overall with sophomore Mike Kossoff, including 1-1 in MAC play. Down the stretch, he played at the third flight with fellow freshman Peter Gardonyi, and that duo went 5-1 overall.
On Saturday (April 29), Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo was named the MAC Newcomer of the Year. His 45 total victories this season ranks fourth on the BGSU list.
Hiscox and Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo were the only two freshmen to make the All-MAC squad.
BGSU finished the 1999-2000 season with an overall dual-match record of 16-8, and the Falcons of head coach Jay Harris went 5-1 in MAC play to earn a league regular-season co-championship. The Brown and Orange advanced to the semifinals of the MAC Championships before losing to eventual tourney champ Ball State.
