BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team hit a season-best .402 en route to a three-game sweep of visiting IUPUI Saturday afternoon (Sept. 16) at Anderson Arena. The Falcons downed the Jaguars by scores of 15-13, 15-4 and 15-5 in the match, which was part of the BGSU Invitational.
For the Falcons, now 6-2 on the year, the win was the sixth in a row after an 0-2 start to the 2000 season.
BGSU fell behind, 3-0, in the first game, and IUPUI upped the lead to 13-6 before the Falcons caught fire. BG reeled off the last nine points of the game. The Falcons got back-to-back kills from sophomore Kate Yeo and junior Caty Rommeck to move within 13-12, and a service ace by freshman Susie Norris tied the contest. After a time-out, a Shyann Robinson kill was followed by game-ending block assists from Rommeck and freshman Nadia Bedricky.
The Jaguars again took an early lead in game two, scoring the first two points. With that game knotted at 3-3, however, the Falcons again made a large run. A Robinson kill was followed by back-to-back solo blocks from sophomore Kristin Gamby, giving BGSU a 12-3 lead and all but ending the game.
In game three, the Falcons scored 11 consecutive points, capped by a pair of Rommeck kills, to take a commanding 13-1 lead. The Jaguars scored four of the next five points, but -- just like in game one -- block assists from Bedricky and Rommeck closed out the contest.
Falcon coach Denise Van De Walle got a balanced effort from her squad, as 13 players saw action in the win. No Falcon hit double-digits in the kills department, but five players had at least five kills, led by Rommeck and Bedricky with eight apiece.
Robinson and Gamby had seven and six kills, respectively, while Norris had five. Senior JoAnna Papageorgiou had kills on all three of her swings in the match, while junior setter Natalie Becker had three kills in four attack attempts.
Bedricky hit an impressive .800 in the win, and Rommeck hit .389 in the contest.
Defensively, Rommeck had a team-best nine digs and a match-high six total blocks. Norris and Becker had eight and seven digs, respectively, and Bedricky had three block assists.
For the Jaguars, now 3-8, Sara Sparks had a match-high 11 kills, while Pandy Long recorded 10 digs.
IUPUI will return to action at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, facing Evansville. The Falcons will close out the BGSU Invitational with a 7:00 p.m. match against Illinois at Chicago. The BGSU-UIC matchup will feature a pair of teams that are 2-0 in the tournament.
