BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team downed the visiting University of Illinois at Chicago in a four-game contest Saturday (Sept. 16), in the process winning the BGSU Invitational at Anderson Arena. The Falcons topped the Flames by scores of 15-11, 13-15, 15-10, 15-8.
A trio of Falcons made the all-tournament team, led by junior Caty Rommeck. Rommeck, who was named the tournament's MVP, was joined on the squad by classmates Natalie Becker and Shyann Robinson.
Two UIC players -- Erica Anderson and Lynn Clarkson -- also made the all-tourney squad, as did Ladi Iya from third-place Evansville.
In the decisive match of the tournament, senior JoAnna Papageorgiou had a match-high 21 kills to lead four Falcons in double digits in that department. Rommeck and freshman Susie Norris had 18 kills apiece, with Norris hitting a match-best .500, while Robinson had 13 kills.
Papageorgiou had a .457 hitting percentage on the evening, as the Falcons hit .333 as a team.
Becker dished out 61 assists, while Norris had a match-high 26 digs to lead five double-digit Falcons. Junior Karen Tangeman had 12 digs, while Becker and Rommeck each had 11 and freshman Nadia Bedricky 10.
Rommeck, who entered the weekend as the Mid-American Conference's leading blocker, had seven, including three solos. Papageorgiou also had seven rejections as the Falcons had a team total of 14.
For the visitors, Lindsey Filkins had 20 kills to lead four double-digit Flames. Ann Hintz had a team-best 16 digs, while Anderson had 57 assists.
The Falcons, now 7-2 on the season, won a tournament for the second consecutive weekend. BGSU, which also won the UCF Invitational in Orlando, Fla. (Sept. 8-9), has won seven straight matches after beginning the year at 0-2.
UIC lost for just the second time in 11 matches this year.
BGSU continues a seven-match homestand next weekend, hosting defending MAC champion Ball State Friday (Sept. 22) before meeting last year's MAC East Division winner, Akron, the following night. Both matches will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
