
Women's Hoops Downed By Western Michigan, 86-70

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Host Western Michigan University pulled away late to post an 86-70 win over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Wednesday (Jan. 31). The Mid-American Conference game was held at WMU's University Arena.
With the win, the Broncos improve to 5-13 overall and 2-5 in MAC play. WMU was the preseason choice of the MAC News Media Association to win both the West Division and the conference tournament.
Karen Deurloo did much of the damage for WMU, with game-high totals of 26 points and 15 rebounds. Emily Samuelson added 20.
The Broncos led by just four points, 65-61, with 6:15 left, but went on a 12-0 run over the next four-plus minutes. The hosts scored scored six of those points at the free-throw line.
Sophomore Kim Griech led four Falcons in double digits with 15 points, while junior Francine Miller added 14 and seniors Jackie Adlington and Afra Smith had 10 apiece.
The Falcons, who lost for the fourth game in a row, drop to 8-11 and 4-4.
BGSU shot .563 from the field in the first half, making 18-of-32 shots before the intermission, but the Broncos held the Falcons to a .382 (13-of-34) rate in the second half. The Falcons shot .470 for the game.
By contrast, WMU shot .500 or better in each half, and shot .547 (29-of-53) for the game.
Western Michigan shot 31 free throws in the game to the Falcons' two.
The Falcons return to action Saturday (Feb. 3), hosting defending MAC champion Kent State University in a noon start at Anderson Arena. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Net Ohio.
