STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Bowling Green State University men's tennis junior Geoff Hiscox won his fourth-round singles match at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men's All-American Championships Sunday (Oct. 7). The tourney, the nation's largest collegiate tennis tournament, is being held at the Lincoln Tennis Center.
Hiscox defeated San Diego State's Travis Hasson in three sets (6-4, 6-7 [5], 6-3) in Sunday action. Hiscox defeated competitors from Charlotte, Charleston Southern and Alabama, respectively, over the first three rounds of the tourney.
The 256-player singles draw is down to the final 16, including Hiscox, and Monday's (Oct. 8) eight winners will advance to the Oct. 9-10 qualifying draw. The main draw takes place Oct. 11-14. A player who starts in the prequalifying singles tournament must win seven matches in six days just to reach the main draw.
The first ITA national and singles and doubles championships of the 2001-02 season, the ITA All-American Championships are one of three national collegiate tennis championships of the season. The ITA Men's All-American Championships (its women's counterpart, the Riviera Women's All-American Championships is taking place in Pacific Palisades, Calif., this week), the Nov. 8-11 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and the year-end NCAA Championships are college tennis' three national championship events during the season.
