CONWAY, S.C. - The University of Virginia used a four-run fourth inning to capture a 5-1 victory over the Bowling Green State University softball team Tuesday night (March 13). The game was part of the Coastal Carolina University Classic.
The win gives both UVa and BGSU a 3-1 record in the tournament, but the Cavaliers earn the top seed for Wednesday's (March 14) championship-round action by virtue of Tuesday night's win.
The Cavaliers broke on top in the bottom of the first, scoring a run off BGSU freshman Jody Johnson. Johnson, making her first collegiate start, allowed all five runs, but just two were earned. She pitched three-and-a-third innings, walking three batters (all in the first inning).
UVa's unearned run in that first frame came without a hit. The Cavaliers benefitted from a BGSU error, in addition to the three walks.
The Cavaliers scored four times in the fourth inning, all starting with a bunt single. After a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch, the next UVa batter reached on a fielder's choice, with the runner at third, Heather Field, scoring on another Falcon error. Then, back-to-back singles chased Johnson and brought on junior Jessie Milosek. She got one out on a fielder's choice, but surrendered a double to UVa's Ruby Rojas before retiring the side.
BGSU's only run came in the top of the sixth. Senior Jen Domschot singled up the middle to open the inning, but she was erased on a fielder's choice by junior Renee Rosemeier. Rosemeier took second on a wild pitch, then scored on a triple by senior Nikki Rouhana. Rouhana had three of BGSU's seven hits, reaching safely in all three plate appearances.
Sophomore Libby Voshell went 2-of-3 at the plate for the Brown and Orange, who drop to 5-4 on the year. Virginia improves to 16-7.
UVa's Joanna Barstad threw a complete game for the win.
The Falcons, seeded second for Wednesday's action, will play third-seeded East Carolina at 11:30 a.m. The winner of that game will advance to the championship contest at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
