BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Junior Andrea Genter fired a three-hit shutout, and senior Jen Domschot tied the school career homerun record as the Bowling Green State University softball team completed a sweep of visiting Ohio University, 3-0. The game, the second half of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader, was held at the BGSU Softball Field.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 17-14 overall and 7-3 in MAC play. Ohio drops to 24-14 and 9-4, respectively.
Genter had a one-hitter through six innings before allowing a pair of hits in the seventh frame. She held the Bobcats off the scoreboard, though, to earn her first shutout of the season.
Jen Domschot blasted a two-run homer to right field in the sixth inning to give Genter a three-run lead. For Domschot, the round-tripper was the 11th of her BGSU career, and moves her into a tie for the school's career record. She shares the mark with teammate Lynsey Ebel, who hit her 11th homer last Wednesday (April 4) vs. Michigan, and Colleen Bates (1997-2000).
Ohio starting pitcher Kristie Howe matched Genter pitch for pitch for most of the game. Howe, a freshman who was making just her fourth collegiate appearance, had a no-hitter through four innings before the Falcons broke through for a fifth-inning run.
Senior Angie Domschot led off that fifth frame with a bloop single into right-center. One out later, sophomore Libby Voshell collected what would prove to be the game-winning RBI with a line-drive double past a diving Ohio leftfielder. Domschot came all the way around to score from first.
BG added to that lead in the sixth, when sophomore Kandice Machain had a one-out single to chase Howe and bring in Val Wood. Jen Domschot, the first batter Wood faced, drove a 1-2 pitch over the fence in right. Those runs would provide insurance for Genter.
The BG junior, after giving up a two-out single in the first inning, did not allow a hit until the final frame. She surrendered just one walk in the game, to the leadoff batter in the second inning, and that runner was erased when a sacrifice attempt was popped up for a double play.
That popup began a string of 15 consecutive batters retired by Genter, who improved to 4-2 this season. Genter now has an ERA of 2.10 on the year, and is 1-1 with an 0.51 ERA in league play. The complete game was her fifth in seven starts this season.
Howe allowed three hits in 5.1 innings of work, surrendering two runs. She struck out three batters and did not issue a walk. Wood allowed one hit (the Jen Domschot homer) and one walk in her two-thirds of an inning.
The shutout was the first suffered by the Bobcats in 23 games dating to March 3. In the doubleheader, the Falcons held Ohio to two runs, both unearned. BGSU pitching limited Ohio's top-three hitters -- Crystal Turner, Kelli Bankert and Tiffany Bolton -- to a combined 3-of-19 effort (.158) in the two games.
For the Falcons, the win was the 11th consecutive victory at home against a MAC foe. Angie Domschot went 3-of-5 at the plate on the afternoon, and is hitting .533 (8-of-15) in home games in 2001.
The Brown and Orange will hit the road for a Wednesday (April 11) doubleheader against 11th-ranked Notre Dame (32-3). First pitch of the first game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. locally (4:30 p.m. BG time) at Ivy Field. The games are scheduled to be aired on Notre Dame's athletic web site (www.und.com).
