HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Host Marshall University rallied from a six-run deficit to post a 12-10 victory over the Bowling Green State University baseball team Friday afternoon (April 13). The Mid-American Conference game was held at MU's University Heights Field.
Jason Ricceri hit his 10th homer of the year, a three-run shot to centerfield in the eighth inning, to cap the rally. The Thundering Herd improved to 18-13 overall and 6-3 in MAC play, while the first-place Falcons drop to 21-9 and 9-3, respectively.
The loss broke a seven-game winning streak for BGSU. The Falcons had won the last five MAC games prior to Friday's setback.
The win was Marshall's first over the Falcons since 1970. Current MU head coach Dave Piepenbrink was only five years old the last time the Herd beat BGSU.
BGSU now leads the all-time series by a 37-9 margin. The Falcons had won 11-straight games in the series, including eight since Marshall rejoined the MAC.
Bowling Green used the long ball to take the lead early in the game. Senior Aric Christman led off the afternoon with his fifth homer of the season, and junior Nick Elrod hit his third dinger to start the second inning. Senior Lee Morrison had a three-run shot, his fifth, in the third frame, and sophomore Corey Loomis also had a three-run shot, his seventh of the year, in the fifth as BG took a 9-3 lead.
Marshall got two runs back in the fifth on a ground ball by Matt Eldridge and a double by Ryan Kobbe. Eldridge and Homer Renshaw had driven in single runs in the second and third innings, respectively, on ground balls.
A three-run homer off the bat of the Herd's Jason Brooks in the seventh inning started the comeback. Brooks had three hits in the game, including his 13th and 14th homeruns, and drove in four runs.
Herd freshman pitcher Brandon Bartos (4-1) was the beneficiary of the Marshall comeback. He worked 3 2/3 innings in relief of starter Chris Wean, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five. Classmate Grant Harper came on to work a perfect ninth inning, striking out two, for his first save. The ninth was the only inning in the game in which the Falcons were retired in order.
Falcon closer Clayton Booth (4-1) got the loss. He surrendered four runs on four hits in 1/3 of an inning of work. Starter Brett Baumgartner lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits.
The Herd outhit the Falcons, 14-12. David Colangelo, Riccieri, Brooks and Kobbe all had three-hit games for the hosts.
Morrison led the Brown and Orange with three hits, while Loomis and junior Len Elias had two hits apiece.
Marshall's win, coupled with Ball State's 6-3 victory at Kent State, moved the Thundering Herd into a tie with the Golden Flashes for second place in the MAC's East Division. The Falcons still lead the division, a game-and-a-half ahead of both MU and KSU.
BGSU and Marshall will square off in a Saturday (April 14) doubleheader, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
