BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - For the fifth consecutive match, the Bowling Green State University men's tennis team came out a winner. And, also for the fifth-straight match, the final score was 7-0, as the Falcons downed Northern Illinois University in a Mid-American Conference contest Saturday (April 14).
With the win, BGSU improves to 17-8, and the Falcons are 3-1 in MAC play. BGSU has won the most matches in 22 years, or since the 1978-79 team posted a 20-5 record. NIU drops to 11-10 and 1-3, respectively.
BGSU captured the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. The team of sophomore Geoff Hiscox and senior Brandon Gabel won at the middle flight, while sophomore Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo combined with freshman Nick Moxley for a third-flight victory.
In singles, the host Falcons swept all six matches. Hiscox lost just three total games en route to his win over Raymond van Wasbeek at the top flight, while junior Vitek Wild won in straight sets over Juan Pablo Barriga at flight number-two.
That win was the 140th of Wild's BGSU career. He needs just one more win to tie Dave Anderton (1995-98) for second place on the school's combined career wins list, and needs only two victories to match first-place Radu Bartan (1996-99). Wild now ranks fourth with 75 career singles wins, and is sixth on the doubles list with 65 victories.
Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo, Moxley, junior Mike Kossoff and Gabel won at singles flights three through six, respectively. Moxley's match was the only one to require a third set, which he won by a 6-0 score. He, Hiscox and Wild all now have 22 singles wins this season, one behind sophomore Micael Lopez-Acevedo's team-leading total.
BGSU is scheduled to play two matches in the final week of the regular season. The Falcons will conclude the home schedule with a Wednesday (April 18) match vs. Wright State University. That contest is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Keefe Courts.
Then, BG heads to Ball State for a crucial MAC match Friday (April 20). A Falcon win would assure BGSU of a tie for the league's regular-season crown for the second year in a row. First-place BSU is 4-0 in MAC play entering Friday's showdown.
The MAC Championships will be held April 26-28 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
