BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball team used a five-run first inning to post a second consecutive 6-2 decision over the University of Detroit Mercy. The game, the second half of a non-conference doubleheader, was held at the BGSU Softball Field Monday (April 16).
The Falcons, who won the first game by an identical score, improve to 19-14 on the season, while the visiting Titans drop to 12-21.
The visitors loaded the bases with just one out in the top of the first inning against BGSU freshman Jody Johnson. Johnson, making just her third start of the season, got out of the jam. She induced Steph Strauss to hit into a fielder's choice, as Laura Gignac was forced out at the plate. Then, Johnson got Steph Mordus to pop up to third base and end the threat.
It didn't take long for the Falcons to reach the scoreboard, as the first six batters got hits in the bottom of the first. Senior Nikki Rouhana led off with her team-leading fourth triple of the year, and scored when sophomore Kandice Machain singled through the left side of the infield. Then, senior Jen Domschot doubled to centerfield to plate Machain.
The Falcon hit parade continued, as the next three batters singled. Junior Renee Rosemeier's hit to left scored Jen Domschot, and Angie Domschot's blooper fell just in front of a diving Titan centerfielder. Senior Lynsey Ebel singled up the middle to load the bases.
Jenifer Kernahan, the seventh player to bat, hit into a fielder's choice, as Rosemeier was forced at the plate. But, sophomore Jess Jenkins ripped a two-run single to left to give the Brown and Orange a 5-0 lead. In all, 10 batters came to the plate in that half-inning.
The Falcons scored another run in the second inning, courtesy of the Domschot twins and a little help from Detroit. Jen Domschot hit a one-out double, and Angie Domschot's blooper behind the second-base bag hit off the UDM second baseman's glove, bringing the Falcons' sixth run home.
UDM starter Bridget Teisl, who also started the first game, pitched the first three innings of the second game. Teisl threw a total of 69 pitches in her complete-game effort in the opener, and she also threw 69 pitches in her three-inning stint in the nightcap.
The Titans got a pair of runs off Johnson in the fourth frame. A walk, a catcher's interference call and a single loaded the bases with nobody out, before Melanie Davis hit a bloop single to left to score Strauss. Then, Raina Dailey hit a grounder to Falcon third baseman Liz Tuza, who threw home. Catcher Kernahan could not handle the throw, however, allowing Mordus to score and make it a four-run game.
The next batter, Andrea Sikora, hit a ball to deep centerfield, but Jen Domschot made a nice running catch with her back to the plate. She fired the ball to second to double the runner off base for a double play. Johnson got the next hitter, Gignac, to fly out to left field, where Machain made a diving catch as the wind blew the ball back toward the infield dirt.
Neither team would score again, although the Titans threatened in the seventh. A leadoff walk put a runner aboard, but the next batter fouled out to third base. UDM's Devon Brisky hit an apparent bloop single to center, but the baserunner, Brandy Barren, had to wait to see if the ball would be caught and was forced at second.
A hit batter and a walk loaded the bases and brought the potential tying run to the plate for the second consecutive game. But, Mordus lined out to Jen Domschot in centerfield for the final out.
The Falcons outhit the Titans, 11-5, getting seven of those hits in the first inning. Rouhana, Jen Domschot and Angie Domschot all had two-hit games, while freshman Valerie Tipton, coming off the bench to play in her first collegiate game, had her first hit as a Falcon.
Jen Domschot scored a pair of runs, while Jenkins was the lone BG player with a pair of RBI.
Nichole Taucher was the lone Titan with two hits.
Johnson earned the win, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned). She walked five batters in the contest, but improved her record to 2-2 on the year with her first collegiate complete game.
Teisl took the loss to drop to 7-5 on the season. Connie Angeles pitched three innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits and a walk.
The Falcons are now 6-1 at home this season. During Leigh Ross-Shaw's two-plus years as head coach, BG has a record of 29-8 at the BGSU Softball Field.
The Falcons have now gone 15 consecutive games without allowing more than two earned runs.
In the doubleheader sweep, Angie and Jen Domschot had three hits apiece. Angie Domschot is now batting .524 (11-for-21) in home games this season.
The Brown and Orange is scheduled to play five-straight Mid-American Conference road games, beginning with a Tuesday (April 17) doubleheader vs. the University of Akron. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at UA's Buchtel Field. BG then heads to Buffalo for a three-game weekend series.
