BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team will head to Huntington, W.Va., to participate in the 2001 Mid-American Conference Championships this weekend. The tournament begins Thursday (April 26) and runs through Sunday (April 29).
The Falcons are seeded sixth in the 10-team, single-elimination tournament and will face third-seeded Miami in a Friday (April 27) match, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
In Thursday's opening round, eighth-seeded Toledo meets #9 Buffalo at 10:00 a.m., while #7 Northern Illinois takes on #10 Akron at 2:00 p.m.
In addition to the Falcons' Friday match, the other quarterfinal matchups consist of the UT/UB winner vs. #1 Western Michigan (10:00 a.m.), #4 Eastern Michigan vs. #5 Ball State (10:00 a.m.) and the NIU/UA winner vs. #2 Marshall (2:00 p.m.)
The BGSU/Miami winner will advance to Saturday's (April 28) semifinals to face NIU, UA or Marshall. That semifinal match, the second of the day, will begin at 2:00 p.m.
The championship match is scheduled for Sunday (April 29) at 1:00 p.m.
The Falcons went 8-13 during the regular season and finished sixth in the MAC with a 4-5 league mark. BGSU lost to Miami, 6-1, during the teams' regular-season meeting last weekend (April 20).
Western Michigan won the regular-season crown with a perfect 8-0 record, followed by Marshall (8-1), Miami (7-2), EMU (6-2), BSU (5-4), BGSU (4-5), NIU (3-6), UT (2-7), UB (1-8) and UA (0-9). Several teams are listed with just eight matches, rather than nine, because the results of several contests were thrown out by the ITA and the MAC office.
Last season, the Falcons advanced to the semifinal round with a 4-3 quarterfinal win over Ball State, before being eliminated by eventual champion Western Michigan.
