BGSU Golf Teams Kick Off 2001-02 Seasons

Bowling Green - The Bowling Green men's and women's golf teams begin their 2001-02 seasons this weekend. The women's squad kicks off its fall season in Muncie, Ind., at the Ball State Invitational, Sept. 8-9. The men's team begins action on Monday, Sept. 10, at the EDS/Detroit Titans Invitational in Jackson, Mich.
Men's coach Garry Winger, in his fourth season as head coach, follows the season-opener with a trip to the Ball State Invitational, Sept. 21-23, at The Players Club in Yorktown, Ind. On the weekend of Oct. 7-9 the Brown & Orange go to Cincinnati to play in the Xavier Invitational at Grizzly Course at Kings Island. The team concludes its fall schedule at the Wright State Fall Invitational in Beavercreek, Ohio. The Falcons will play at Beavercreek Golf Club designed by Fuzzy Zoeller.
Winger returns three Top-20 finishers from last spring's Mid-American Conference Tournament, including senior Brian Gerken (T-13th), and juniors Adam Balls (T-15th) and Andy Miller (T-15th). All together, the Falcons roster will include two seniors, three juniors and three freshmen.
BGSU women's coach Kurt Thomas, entering his fifth season as head coach, and the Falcons host the BGSU Invitational, Sept. 22-23, at the Forrest Creason Golf Course. It will be the only home match for either the men or women this fall. After that, BGSU wraps up its fall schedule with trips to the Michigan Invitational (Oct. 6-7) and the Eastern Kentucky Invitational (Oct. 12-13).
Thomas has his entire team returning from a year ago, including second-team All-MAC performer Jenny Schnipke. The sophomore finished sixth at the MAC Tournament last season in her first year on the collegiate level. Also finishing in the Top-10 was Shelley Binzel who placed eighth. She returns for her junior year. Thomas will have two seniors, three juniors and three sophomores.
The men's squad placed sixth at the MAC Championship in 2001 while the women's team finished fifth at the MAC Championship.
