Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's gymnastics team took home win number two of the season when they hosted Central Michigan Saturday at BGSU's Eppler Center Complex. The Falcons posted an impressive 194.225, while the Chippewas finished at 192.200.
BG took a significant lead over the Chips going into the final event of the evening, the floor exercise. Head Coach Dan Connelly was thoroughly excited as his floor team performed extremely well posting a 49.000. "Scoring a 49.000 on the floor is huge," said Connelly.
This is the first time Connelly has beaten Central and the first time since the 87-88 season that BG has beaten the Chips in regular season competition. "Teams like Missouri and Central are not pushovers, so this is a great way to start the season." The Falcons are now 2-0 for 2002 and are 1-0 in Mid-American Conference competition.
Several individual performances helped the Falcons to their big win on Saturday. Most notably were performances on the bars by freshmen Kari Elste and Stephanie Sams who scored a 9.700 and a 9.675 respectively. Senior Marny Oestreng also had another stellar meet as she placed first in the vault (9.700), first on the bars (9.850), first on the floor (9.925) and first in the all-around (39.200). Sophomores Pia Sjovall and Melissa Popovich each received second place finishes. Svojall scored on the vault with a 9.675 while Popovich scored a 9.875 on the floor.
The Falcons travel to Muncie, Indiana on Friday, January 25 to take on Ball State at 7 p.m.
