CINCINNATI, Ohio - Host Xavier University captured wins at five of the six singles flights to defeat the Bowling Green State University women's tennis team, 5-2, Monday (Jan. 21). The Musketeers improve to 1-2 in dual-match play with the win, while the Falcons drop to 0-2 on the young season.
For the Falcons, freshman Susan Schoenberger was a bright spot, winning both of her matches. She defeated XU's Emily Senich at the fourth singles flight, losing a total of just three games in the process, and teamed with fellow freshman Laura Kokinda for an 8-4 win at the middle doubles flight.
BGSU's other victory in the match came at the third doubles flight, courtesy of sophomores Gaby Coello and Jessica Johnson. The Falcon tandem posted an 8-2 win over their XU foes.
Other singles competitors for the Brown and Orange included senior Devon Bissinger (No. 1 flight), sophomore Lisa Maloney (No. 2), junior Alyson Gabel (No. 3), Kokinda (No. 5) and freshman Cameron Benjamin (No. 6). Kokinda extended her Xavier opponent to three sets, winning the first set and dropping the second set in a tiebreaker. Likewise, Gabel and Maloney each went to three sets before succumbing.
The Falcons' top doubles flight consisted of Bissinger and Maloney.
BGSU will return to action with the first "home" contest of the dual-match season. The Falcons will face Wright State on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo. That match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
