
Fast Kent State Start Dooms Falcons, 82-62

KENT, Ohio - Host Kent State University opened the game on a 27-6 run, and the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team never recovered. The result was an 82-62 KSU win in Mid-American Conference action Wednesday (Jan. 23). The game was played at the Memorial Athletic & Convocation Center.
BGSU (5-13 overall, 2-5 MAC) threatened to narrow the gap late in the first half. Trailing by a 30-9 count, the Falcons went on an 8-0 run, as layups by sophomores Lindsay Austin and Stefanie Wenzel were followed by a Kim Griech three-pointer. With the score still 30-17, the Falcons had a possession in which they got off a pair of three-point attempts, neither of which would fall. KSU (9-9, 5-2) rebounded the second shot, the Falcons were called for a foul, and the Flashes began a 12-0 run of their own which sealed the deal.
BGSU would get no closer than 16 points in the remainder of the game.
Wenzel led four Falcon double-digit scorers with 13 points, while sophomore Pam Brown had 12 points off the bench. Griech added 11 points and a team-high five assists, while senior Dana Western-Schuka had 10 points and led BG with three blocked shots and three steals. Sophomore Kelly Kapferer had a team-best nine rebounds.
The Golden Flashes had five players in double digits in scoring, including two with double-doubles. Katalin Kollat had a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Valerie Zona had 17 and Kate Miller 16. Ashley Clark had 14 points and a game-best 16 rebounds, while Jamie Rubis came off the bench to score 13 points.
The Flashes shot .474 from the field, including .500 (8-of-16) from three-point land, to BG's .345. The Falcons were 8-of-27 (.296) from long range. KSU won the battle of the boards by a 46-32 count.
The Falcons return home to face Marshall in Saturday (Jan. 26) action. That game, which is the second half of a doubleheader, will start shortly after the completion of the men's basketball game between BGSU and Kent State. The men's game begins at noon.
