Evansville, Ind. - Evansville completed a weekend sweep of visiting Bowling Green on Sunday with a 15-10 decision at Charles H. Braun Stadium.
The Falcons jumped out early and fast with three runs in the first inning. David Barkholz walked and Andy Hudak followed with a double to left field, scoring Barkholz. Senior Len Elias then walked putting runners on first and second with no outs. After a fly out and strikeout, Nick Elrod singled to left field, scoring Hudak and pushing Elias to third. A balk by Fernando Luis De Aza plated Elias for a 3-0 Falcon lead.
However, Evansville's Blake Whealy led off the bottom of the inning with a homer and the Purple Aces finished the inning with four runs on four hits to take the lead, 4-3. Another run in the second brought an end to BGSU starter Keith Laughlin who gave up five runs on seven hits in an inning and a third.
UE added to its lead in the fourth inning with five runs to push Bowling Green's deficit to 10-3. The visitors came back, though, with five runs of their own in the top half of the fifth frame. After Barkholz struck out, Hudak walked and Elias singled. Both moved up a base on an error by the centerfielder and moved up again with a wild pitch from De Aza, scoring Hudak. Kelly Hunt followed with a two-run blast over the centerfield wall. Corey Loomis reached on a bunt single and then went to second base on a balk. Tim Newell then came to the plate two batters later and hit his first homer of the season, cutting the Aces' lead to 10-8.
A run by UE in the bottom of the inning pushed the lead back to three runs before Bowling Green trimmed it to just one in the sixth inning with two runs.
Spencer Schmitz started the inning by singling to center, advancing on a wild pitch and reaching third on a Barkholz bunt single. Schmitz then scored on a sacrifice fly by Hudak making the score 11-9. After Barkholz moved to second on a wild pitch, Elias doubled him home, cutting it to 11-10. Elias got to third and Loomis was hit by a pitch before Elrod grounded out to end the inning.
That was as close as BGSU (1-5) would get as Evansville plated two runs each in the seventh and eighth innings for a 15-10 win.
Hudak, Hunt and Newell each had two RBIs for BG. Laughlin dropped to 1-1 on the mound.
The Falcons return to the state of Ohio for its next three-game series at the University of Dayton next weekend (March 2-3). BGSU plays a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and has a single game with the Flyers on Sunday at 1 p.m.
