
Ohio Rallies To Defeat BGSU, 78-69, In OT

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Ohio University senior Cathy Szall made a conventional three-point play with 14.5 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and the visiting Bobcats held the Bowling Green State University women's basketball without a field goal in the extra session to defeat the Falcons, 78-69, Tuesday night (Feb. 5) at Anderson Arena. OU is 9-11 and 4-5 in the Mid-American Conference, while BGSU falls to 7-15 and 4-7 in the league.
Ohio improves to 4-0 on the season in overtime contests, while BGSU drops to 0-2 in OT games.
The Falcons led, 37-28, at halftime and had a 45-35 lead with 15:52 remaining. Ohio then went on a 15-2 run to take a 50-47 lead with 10:45 left in regulation. The Falcons responded with a run of their own and scored the next 12 points, including two three-pointers by sophomore Stefanie Wenzel to lead by a 59-50 count with 7:50 left.
Ohio chipped away, but the Falcons grabbed a 65-61 lead with 1:39 left on a Pam Brown layup. After Kim Griech made one of two charity tosses to give the Falcons a 66-63 lead, Szall hit a driving layup and drew the foul. She made her free throw to tie the game.
BGSU got the ball to senior Dana Western-Schuka for a three-point attempt which missed the mark. Griech got the rebound and an off-balance shot at the buzzer, but it would not fall and the teams went to overtime.
Ohio took the lead for good , 68-66, on a layup by Lori Moorman with 4:16 left in overtime. The Bobcats never looked back. OU went 2-of-6 from the field in the OT, but scored eight points at the foul line. The Falcons were 0-of-7 from the floor in the extra session.
Szall and Moorman each scored 22 to lead the Bobcats, while Wenzel led BGSU with 20. Griech and sophomore Lindsay Austin hit double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Each team shot .351 from the floor and had 47 rebounds. The Bobcats, however, were 30-of-38 (.816) from the free-throw line, while the Falcons went 12-of-20 (.600) from the stripe.
Brown had 14 boards, a BGSU season high, to lead the Falcons in that category. Moorman had 12 rebounds to lead OU and post the double-double.
The Falcons now return to the road for a Saturday (Feb. 9) contest at Miami University. Starting time is 2:00 p.m. at MU's Millett Hall in Oxford, Ohio.
