COLUMBUS, Ohio - Drake University snapped a four-match losing skid with a 5-2 win over the Bowling Green State University women's tennis team Saturday (March 9). The neutral-site match was held in Columbus, Ohio.
With the loss, the Falcons drop to 1-8 in dual-match play this season.
The Bulldogs swept the doubles matches with Cecily Dubusker and Cindy Skogerboe winning at the top flight over senior Devon Bissinger and freshman Susan Schoenberger. Annali de Bruyn and Jenny Saluri took the No. 2 flight, 8-5, against the Falcon tandem of sophomores Gaby Coello and Lisa Maloney, while Melinda Fenimore and Marie Mainil won at the third level against junior Alyson Gabel and sophomore Jessica Johnson.
In the singles matches, the Falcons got wins at the fourth and fifth flights. Schoenberger posted a straight-sets win over Fenimore (6-1, 7-5) at the fourth level, while Coello captured a third-set tiebreaker to down Saluri (6-3, 5-7, 11-9) at the fifth flight.
Dubusker was a winner at No. 1, defeating Maloney, while de Bruyn won over Bissinger in three sets at No. 2 (3-6, 6-4, 6-3). At the third flight, Skogerboe picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Gabel. DU's Traci Hogan was a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 winner at No. 6 singles, besting Johnson.
The Falcons will head to California for three matches during BGSU's spring break. The trip begins with a Tuesday (March 12) match vs. Colorado State in Newport Beach, Calif.
