EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team won the doubles point on the road against No. 62 Michigan State University, but the host Spartans rebounded to post a 5-2 win over the Falcons Saturday (March 16).
The Spartans improved to 10-5 with the victory, while the Falcons dropped to 9-7 in dual-match play this season.
The Brown and Orange took two of the three doubles contests. At the top flight, the team of senior Vitek Wild and junior Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo were on the wrong end of match point twice vs. MSU's Jimmy McGuire and Eric Simonton, at 7-6 and 8-7, but the Falcon duo broke serve each time and went on to win the tiebreaker and the match, 9-8 (3).
The number-two doubles team of sophomore Milos Jirout and freshman Ian Bliss also won, posting an 8-6 decision over MSU's Adam Hourani and Chris Mitchell. Senior Mike Kossoff and sophomore Joel Carney dropped an 8-4 decision at the third flight.
Wild, the winningest player in BGSU history, kept his success going as he posted a straight-sets win over Mitchell at the top flight, but he was the lone Falcon able to post a singles win. Carney lost in three sets at the fourth flight, while Jirout (flight #2), Lopez-Acevedo (#3), Bliss (#5) and Kossoff (#6) rounded out BGSU's singles lineup.
Wild now has a career total of 166 combined victories, 24 more than any other player in school history.
The Falcons played without junior Geoff Hiscox for the second consecutive match. The status of Hiscox, who was injured in Tuesday's (March 12) match vs. S.E. Louisiana, is day to day.
The Falcons conclude a five-match swing of contests away from home with a Tuesday (March 19) match at the University of Michigan. Following that match, BGSU will begin a season-long six-match homestand with Saturday (March 23) duals vs. Duquesne and Bradley.
