MUNCIE, Ind. - Ball State University spoiled the Bowling Green State University women's tennis team's league opener, winning a 6-1 decision over the visiting Falcons Thursday (March 22). The Mid-American Conference dual match was held at the Muncie YMCA Indoor Tennis Center.
The Cardinals improved to 9-2 in dual-match play this year, and 1-0 in the MAC. The Falcons dropped to 1-12 and 0-1, respectively.
Host BSU, which appeared in the national Division I tennis poll this week for the first time in school history (ranked 72nd), won the doubles point by taking two of the three matches, then won five-of-six matches on the way to their school-record eighth consecutive victory.
The Falcons got a doubles win at the top flight, as the team of senior Devon Bissinger and freshman Susan Schoenberger posted a 9-7 victory over BSU's Melissa Roach and Abbie Hodge. At the third flight, junior Alyson Gabel and sophomore Jessica Johnson suffered a narrow 8-6 setback.
In singles play, Bissinger had the Falcons' lone win, with a come-from-behind three-set victory over Leisa Brooks at the second flight. Schoenberger and Gabel each dropped three-set decisions at flights three and four, respectively, while both sets of sophomore Lisa Maloney's loss at the top flight were closely contested. Sophomore Gaby Coello and freshman Laura Kokinda competed for the Falcons at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.
The Falcons will return to action next Friday (March 29), with a MAC match at Western Michigan University. The following day, the Brown and Orange will play at Northern Illinois.
