CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University men's tennis student-athlete Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo has been named the co-recipient of the first Mid-American Conference Player of the Week award of the season. The award, given for the week ending March 17, was announced Monday (March 25).
Lopez-Acevedo, a native of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, had a 4-1 record in the Falcons' three matches during the previous week. He won his matches at both the fourth singles and second doubles flights in a 6-1 road win over S.E. Louisiana (March 12). The next day, Lopez-Acevedo was victorious at the third flight, in a third-set tiebreaker, in singles at New Orleans. On March 16, he was defeated at the third singles flight, but teamed with senior Vitek Wild for a win at #1 doubles, at 62nd-ranked Michigan State.
Those results gave Lopez-Acevedo a 16-9 singles record on the year to that point, leading the Falcons in singles victories. He had a doubles mark of 12-7, for a total of 28 wins.
Since that time, he has picked up two more singles wins and two doubles victories, to up his team-high total to 32 wins. He is ranked on the BGSU career top-10 lists in singles (62), doubles (58) and overall victories (120).
Lopez-Acevedo also won the MAC's Male Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Week award for his play during that same week.
Lopez-Acevedo shared the MAC P-O-W award with Ball State junior Chris Varga.
The Falcons, now 11-8 in dual-match play, will continue a six-match homestand with a Saturday (March 30) match vs. DePaul. That contest is scheduled to begin at noon at Keefe Courts.
