Bowling Green, Ohio - After a delayed start and through blustery conditions, the Bowling Green baseball team completed a four-game series sweep of visiting Marshall on Sunday afternoon at Warren Steller Field with a 6-3 victory.
Freshman Burke Badenhop (3-1) pitched eight strong innings, scattering seven hits and allowing just one earned run to pick up this third win of the season. He walked four but struckout five.
Marshall got on the board first after David Colangelo led off the game with a single. He moved to third after Corey Loomis mishandled a grounder by Matt White and scored when he and White successfully completed a double steal for a 1-0 MU lead.
Loomis made up for the error in the home half of the first when he hit a one-out single down the left-field line, stole second and third base, and scored on a Kelly Hunt single to left field, tying the score at 1-1.
BG's second baseman again got things started in the third when he led off with an infield single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Andy Hudak double for a 2-1 Falcon lead.
Meanwhile, Badenhop was cruising on the mound, allowing just three Marshall hits from the fourth through the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Kirk Jensen led off with a single back to the pitcher and scored on a two-out double to center field by Hunt. Hudak then doubled to right-center field to score Hunt and extend BG's lead to 4-1.
Jeff Warnock scored on a Marshall error in the seventh and Tim Newell hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the eighth, scoring Hunt, to finish BG's scoring.
Marshall scored a run in the eighth and ninth innings but couldn't get any closer.
BGSU (17-16 overall, 8-5 MAC) travels to Notre Dame on Wednesday, April 24, for a 6:05 EST game. The Falcons have a four-game series against Toledo next weekend. UT visits Bowling Green on Friday, April 26, and Sunday, April 28, while the Rockets host a doubleheader at Fifth Third Field on Saturday, April 27.
NOTES: Andy Hudak tied a school record with three doubles in the game. Kelly Hunt was 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the win. Hunt finished the weekend with 13 RBIs and three home runs while finishing 9-for-17 (.529 avg.). Neil Schmitz pitched the final inning of the 6-3 win, allowing one run. Schmitz appeared in the last three games of the series, finishing with a win and a save. The win gave BG its longest winning streak of the season at five games. BG moved from fourth to second place over the weekend in the MAC East standings, behind only Kent State.
