BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) - P.J. Smith scored 20 points and Marcus Smallwood added 11 points and 12 rebounds as Northern Illinois beat Bowling Green 63-46 Saturday.
Jay Bates added 13 points for the Huskies (9-8, 5-2 Mid-American Conference), who used scoring runs on both sides of halftime to seize control.
John Reimold led Bowling Green with 18 points and Kevin Netter added 11. The Falcons (9-7, 5-3) have lost two straight and three out of four.
Northern Illinois used a basket by Smallwood, Todd Peterson's 3-pointer and two Bates free throws to close the first half on a 7-0 run and lead 29-21 at the break.
The Huskies opened the second half with a 13-3 surge to lead 42-24 with 15:11 remaining. Smith scored six points in the run on a 3-pointer and three free throws.
The Falcons pulled within eight points three times, the last at 51-43 on a Reimold 3-pointer with 5:14 remaining.
The Huskies pulled ahead 60-44 with 1:56 remaining on a 9-1 run, with the first four points coming on Smith free throws.
Smith finished 8-of-8 at the line, and the Huskies made 22-of-26.
Bowling Green hit just 36 percent of its shots from the field, including 5-of-22 from 3-point range.
