EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team opened the spring portion of the 2002-03 schedule against a nationally-ranked team, and Michigan State University showed why the Spartans are 70th in the country. MSU posted a 7-0 victory over the Falcons Friday night (Jan. 31) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
Playing without junior co-captain Lisa Maloney (out due to injury), the Falcons dropped all six singles matches and all three doubles contests. The lone member of the Brown and Orange to extend her match to a third set was junior Gaby Coello at the fourth flight. Coello won her opening set against MSU's Shelley Brady, before Brady rallied to capture the second and third sets.
The Falcons' singles lineup included sophomore Susie Schoenberger at the top flight and senior Alyson Gabel at the second level. Sophomore Cameron Benjamin, Coello, freshman Heidi Romer and sophomore Laura Kokinda rounded out the team's singles lineup.
In doubles play, Schoenberger and fellow sophomore Kokinda comprised the top flight, with Coello and Gabel at the middle level. Benjamin teamed with junior Jessica Johnson at the third doubles flight.
The Falcons, now 1-1 in dual-match action this season, will host Youngstown State in Sunday (Feb. 2) action. That match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. at Shadow Valley in Toledo.
