Coello/Jakupcin Doubles Team Advances To Semifinals At Spartan Cup

EAST LANSING, Mich. - A Bowling Green State University women's tennis doubles team picked up a win to advance to the semifinal round Saturday (Oct. 11), as the Falcons continued play at the Spartan Cup. Michigan State is hosting the five-team, three-day tournament.
The team of senior Gaby Coello and freshman Ashley Jakupcin downed Ball State's Batty/Kelley team by a 9-8 (3) result in the quarterfinal round of the doubles bracket Saturday. The Falcon duo will meet Toledo's Cueva/Paravicini team in Sunday's semifinals.
In other doubles action, the sophomore tandem of Andrea Meister and Heidi Romer picked up a consolation-round win over the Campbell/Campus team from Ball State, 8-2.
In singles play, Jakupcin lost her semifinal-round match to host MSU's Caroline Lay at the 'A' Flight. In the 'A' Flight's consolation bracket, junior Susie Schoenberger picked up a win over UT's Monica Ribero before losing to Cincinnati's Hannah Hinton.
Also at the top flight, Coello downed UT's Viviana Rivero before falling to UC's Lyndsey Molony.
Freshman Erica Wolfe lost to BSU's Susan Kelley in the quarterfinal round of the 'B' Flight Saturday, while Romer picked up two wins in consolation-bracket play. Romer defeated UT's Daniella Moran before topping teammate and classmate Meister in a three-set match.
Meister had topped UC's Kirby Doran before facing Romer Saturday. Junior Lindsay Mix defeated BSU's Adrienne Campbell before losing to UT's Jen Meister (Andrea's sister), while classmate Cameron Benjamin lost to BSU's Jessica Thompson. Another junior, Laura Kokinda, lost to Toledo's Eunice Paravicini, but then blanked MSU's Marissa Macholz by identical 6-0 scores.
The Spartan Cup concludes with action Sunday (Oct. 12) at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
