BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team surpassed last year's win total of nine, with a four-game victory over the Rockets (30-23, 30-24, 24-30, 30-25) Friday night at Anderson Arena. The last time Bowling Green swept a season series from Toledo was back in 1999.
In game one the Falcons (10-10, 2-4 MAC) raced out to a 7-3 lead with kills from Taylor Twite and Susie Norris, to take a lead they would not relinquish. The Rockets got as close 19-15 before back-to-back kills by Norris and Samantha Rennau gave the Brown & Orange a 21-15 lead and a 30-23 game one victory.
"The way we played in game one, I thought we were going to win in three" said head coach Denise Van De Walle. "But to get a four game win against Toledo is always a great feeling."
With both teams exchanging leads early in game two, knotting the score at 12-12. BGSU went on a 5-0 run to take a 17-12 lead, forcing a UT timeout. The Rockets used the timeout to their advantage to get within two, at 23-21. With two kills by the Falcons and two attack errors by the Rockets gave Bowling Green a 27-23 lead and a game two victory, 30-24.
Toledo (7-13, 3-5 MAC) won game three due in large part to a 16-8 run to begin set three. Bowling Green battled back to within one at 17-18, before a 6-2 run by the Rockets gave them a comfortable lead, and got the match to 2-1, heading to game four.
Game four began much like game three did, with UT getting out to a 12-8 lead. BGSU went on a 7-2 to take their first lead of game four at 15-14. With the Falcons leading by one at 21-20, BGSU scored three of the next four points (due in large part to blocks by Nadia Bedricky and Melissa Mohr) to take a three point lead and cruised to a game four win, 30-25.
"I believe that we have not swept Toledo in four years until tonight" said Van de Walle. "We accomplished a huge team goal tonight.
The last time BGSU swept Toledo was back in 1999, when the Falcons swept UT in three games at Anderson Arena, and then traveled to UT later that season, winning in four sets.
For the match Susie Norris added her 14th double-double of the season with 14 kills and 10 digs.
Samantha Rennau chipped in with 11 kills and Twite added 14 kills. Freshman Chrissy Gothke had a team-leading 20 digs.
The Falcons will be back at home tomorrow night, Saturday, October 18, to face-off with Northern Illinois. The match is set for 7:00 p.m.
