Bowling Green, Ohio - Ferris State's Mark Bomersback scored an extra-attacker goal with just three seconds remaining in regulation to tie Bowling Green on Saturday night, 3-3, at the BGSU Ice Arena.
BGSU had a 3-1 lead heading into the third period before the Bulldogs scored at 9:54 and 19:57 in the final period. The Falcons held on in the overtime period with FSU holding a 5-1 shot advantage to conserve the tie.
FSU got on the board first at 5:44 of the first period with a goal from Derek Nesbitt, his fourth of the season. Junior Steve Brudzewski netted a power-play goal at 16:16 of the first period to knot the game at 1-1. Ryan Minnabarriet and Jonathan Sigalet picked up the assists. The Bulldogs held a 19-9 shot advantage in the first period.
BGSU then took the lead on a Kevin Bieksa goal at 2:26 of the second period, his third of the season. Brett Pilkington won the faceoff in the BGSU zone and Bieksa fired a slapshot from the top of the left circle for his third goal of the season.
Then senior Brian Escobedo netted his second goal of the season at 11:44 of the second period on a backhander at the top of the crease to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead. Mark Wires and D'Arcy McConvey earned assists.
The two goals came on just five shots on net in the second period for BGSU, while FSU had 10 shots in the period. FSU ended with a 45-22 shot advantage in the game.
BGSU's Jordan Sigalet earned Perani Cup first-star honors by stopping 42 shots, the second night in a row he had 40-plus saves. He ended the weekend with 85 saves, three off the school record for a two-game series.
"It was a difficult finish to a very entertaining, yet well-competed game," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch. "I thought we did a lot of things well throughout the game. For the most part, for 65 minutes we competed very well and gave ourselves an opportunity."
Despite attempting 17 shots on the power play, FSU ended 0-for-8 with the man advantage. BGSU ended 1-for-6 on the power play.
"It's tough to give up a two-goal lead," said Jordan Sigalet. "We played a pretty solid game all the way through. Our team just needs to learn to close out games and build on leads when we have them."
The 3-3 tie marked BGSU's sixth of the season, ironically tying a school record set in 2001-02.
FSU is now 6-8-2 overall and 4-7-1 in the CCHA. BGSU stands at 3-8-6 overall and 2-7-3 in league play. The Falcons host non-conference opponent Findlay next Friday, Dec. 12, at the BGSU Ice Arena before a three-week layoff. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
