MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team struggled offensively, as host Central Michigan University held the Falcons to a school record-low 30 points Wednesday night (Feb. 5). The Chippewas scored 42 points to gain the win in Mid-American Conference action at CMU's Rose Arena.
With the win, CMU is now 9-11 overall and 3-6 in the MAC, while the Falcons drop to 9-10 and 2-6, respectively.
The Falcons held the Chippewas to just a .260 field-goal percentage on the night, as CMU made only 13 field goals on the night. But, BGSU made only 11 baskets and shot just .234 from the floor. Each team went 5-of-25 in the second half.
Neither team had a double-digit scorer in the game. Senior Francine Miller tied for game scoring honors with eight points, and had a game-high 11 rebounds. For the Chippewas, Erin Kuhl led the way with eight points. Like Miller, Kuhl scored all eight of her points in the first half.
The Chippewas opened the game on a 9-0 run, holding BG without a point until junior Lindsay Austin split a pair of free throws at the 16:03 mark. The hosts scored the next four points to open a 10-point advantage, but senior Megan Jerome got a rebound putback, and Miller scored on a three-point play to cut the CMU lead to 13-8 midway through the half.
The Falcons never got closer than that five-point deficit, however. Central scored the next four points and eventually opened up a 23-12 lead, but Miller made a basket with 5:13 left, then hit a three-point field goal just over two minutes later, cutting the margin to six points.
Neither team scored again until Lindy Hatfield's hoop gave CMU an eight-point lead with 18 seconds left in the half. That proved to be the Chippewas' only points in a span of 12:51, but the Falcons could draw no closer than six points.
In the second half, neither team would score until freshman Marisa Smith hit a shot with 2:48 elapsed. That would be the only basket by either side for the first 6:24 of the half.
CMU's Lauren Yops hit a three-pointer with 13:36 left in the second stanza, for the hosts' first points. Then, Yops scored again at the 12:44 mark, giving Central a 30-19 lead, and the Falcons could get no closer than eight points over the remainder of the evening.
Central got seven points from three players -- Lindsay Mecoli, Casey Manning and Yops. Manning had a team-high eight rebounds as the Chippewas held a 42-36 advantage in that department.
Freshman Jill Lause was BGSU's second-leading scorer, with six points on 3-of-3 shooting.
The Falcons return home for a Saturday (Feb. 8) game with arch-rival Toledo. That contest is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
