Bearcats Pull Out Match, 5-2

TOLEDO, Ohio - The University of Cincinnati captured the final two singles matches of the day -- both in third-set tiebreakers -- to post a 5-2 win over the Bowling Green State University women's tennis team Saturday afternoon (Feb. 8). The non-conference dual match was held at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo.
The Falcons (now 2-2 overall) opened the day by winning two of three matches to capture the doubles point, but the Bearcats (3-1) won three of the first four singles matches, taking a 3-2 match lead with two singles contests still in progress, each in a third set.
Those two matches were at the top-two flights, and in each case, the UC competitors pulled out 7-6 third-set wins with 8-6 scores in the tiebreakers. The Bearcats' Lyndsey Molony outlasted sophomore Susie Schoenberger at the top flight, while Jen Capuzzi downed senior Alyson Gabel in the second flight.
BGSU's lone singles winner was sophomore Cameron Benjamin, who topped Samantha Liu at the fifth flight. Both junior Gaby Coello and freshman Heidi Romer won their opening sets at the fourth and sixth flights, respectively, but dropped the final two sets.
Junior Lisa Maloney, injured late in the fall season, played her first singles match of the spring campaign, falling to Khushchehr Italia at the third flight.
"It was a very exciting match for the fans," said BGSU coach Penny Dean. "We played hard, and really battled a team that beat us, 7-0, last season.
"It can't get much closer or more exciting. We are improving, but we just need to keep working and improving, and we need to win some of those third sets."
For the Falcons, Schoenberger and Maloney teamed for an 8-6 win at the top doubles flight, while Benjamin and junior Jessica Johnson were victorious at the third flight. UC's duo of Molony and Italia topped Coello and Gabel at the middle level.
The Falcons will head to the Windy City for a pair of matches next weekend vs. DePaul (Friday, Feb. 14) and Illinois at Chicago (Sat., Feb. 15).
