Fresno, Calif. - Penn scored the game's only run of the game in the top of the eighth inning to post a 1-0 win over Bowling Green at the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic on Friday afternoon, hosted by Fresno State University.
BGSU starter Tom Oestrike gave up just two hits in six innings (23 batters faced), allowing five walks and striking out one. Senior Doug Flere (0-1), though, suffered the loss in two and one-third innings of work. After retiring the first two batters of the eighth inning, a walk and hit batsman put two Penn runners on base, setting up the go-ahead double by Mike Goldblatt.
The Falcons (1-7) had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. Kelly Hunt began the inning with a walk and was pinch-ran for by T.J. Carswell, who advanced to second on a wild pitch with no outs. After Nate Henschen struck out swinging for the first out, Carwell moved to third on a balk by Penn pitcher Brian Winings. However, Bobby Majer struck out swinging and Kevin Longstreth grounded out to third base to end the game.
Both teams finished with four hits. Collecting base hits for BGSU were David Barkholz, Jimmy Lipari, Majer and Longstreth.
BGSU ends play in the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic on Saturday when it faces Illinois State at 1 p.m. (EST).
