Falcons Place Fourth At 2003 MAC Championships

Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University gymnastics squad finished the 2003 season with a fourth-place finish in the Mid-American Conference Championships with a score of 195.175. Central Michigan established a new MAC Championship record score of 197.425 to finish in first-place. They were followed by Kent State (196.125) who finished second and Eastern Michigan (195.350) placed third.
The score of 195.175 established a new season-high for the Falcons. Their previous best was a 194.275 set back on March 2, versus Pittsburgh and Wilson College. The Falcons also surpassed their previous top balance beam score by posting a 48.950. Their previous best on the beam was a 48.225, set back on February 9, against Northern Illinois.
The Falcons were led by senior Ann Marie Kassouf, who placed fourth in the all-around with a score of 39.100. That score ranks her fourth all-time in Falcon history in the all-around. She posted scores of 9.775(vault), 9.675 (bars), 9.800 (beam) and 9.850 (floor).
The Falcons began the day on the uneven bars, and were led by junior Melissa Popovich and Kari Elste. Both posted scores of 9.850. That was the top mark on the bars all season for the Falcons.
Following a bye, the Falcons moved over to beam, where they established a new season-best score of 48.900. Freshman Jessica Guyer and Senior Kathy Emerson were the top Falcons, posting scores of 9.825, which was good enough for a tie for fifth place. Ann Marie Kassouf and Kristin DiPietro both posted a 9.800 for an eleventh place finish on the beam. DiPietro also finished seventh overall in the all-around with a combined score of 38.650.
The third event for the Falcons was the floor, where the Falcons posted a team score of 48.500. Popovich posted a 9.900 for the Brown and Orange placing in a tie for fourth, while Pia Sjovall scored a 9.875 and Kassouf posted a 9.850, to round out the top three for the Falcons.
The 2003 MAC Championships ended on the vault for Bowling Green. Kassouf and Guyer were the top Falcon finishers with scores of 9.775. Erin McCollam established a career-best on the vault with a score of 9.725.
MAC Championship Notes:
With a score of 197.425 Central Michigan broke the all-time MAC Championship score of 195.675, set in 2001 by Kent State University.
