KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Host Western Michigan University won at each flight to post a 7-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's tennis team Saturday afternoon (March 29). The Mid-American Conference match was held at the West Hills Athletic Club.
With the victory, the Broncos improve to 11-6 overall and a perfect 4-0 in MAC play, while the Falcons drop to 6-9 and 1-3, respectively.
The Broncos took all three doubles flights. WMU's Maelynn Bernosky and Malena Remynse finished their match first, with a win over sophomore Cameron Benjamin and junior Jessica Johnson at the third flight. The Broncos' Rattiya Hiranrat and Val Stolova topped junior Gaby Coello and senior Alyson Gabel at the second level, and, in the closest match of the three, WMU's top-flight duo of Melanie Peters and Frederika Girsang pulled out a 9-8 win over sophomore Susie Schoenberger and junior Lisa Maloney, in a match that took nearly an hour and a half to complete.
The Broncos dropped just one set in singles play. Sophomore Laura Kokinda battled WMU's Shamim Mayanja even through the first two sets at the sixth flight, before dropping the third "set" by a 10-8 score in a tiebreaker to 10 points.
The Brown and Orange will continue MAC action next weekend, completing a four-match road swing with contests at Marshall Friday (April 4) and Miami Saturday (April 5).
