Bowling Green, Ohio - Four different Bowling Green pitchers held visiting Wright State to three hits and one run in a 10-1 BGSU victory at Warren Steller Field on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Tom Oestrike pitched the first four innings and did not allow a hit or run while striking out a career-high seven batters.
BGSU got on the board early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jeff Warnock and Spencer Schmitz led off the inning with singles and, one out later, Kelly Hunt loaded the bases with a single of his own to right field. The hit extended his career-high hitting streak to 16 games. Steve Raszka followed with an RBI-single and Nate Henschen added another RBI-single for the two-run Falcon lead.
Jesse Sobol scored on a passed ball in the second inning for a 3-0 BGSU lead and Josh Baughman's RBI-single in the fourth, scoring Warnock, made it a 4-0 lead.
Meanwhile, on the mound, Oestrike was mowing WSU batters down. The only reason a Raider runner reached second base in the first four innings was due to a BGSU error. Oestrike struck out two batters in the first, second and fourth innings
Wright State plated a run in the fifth inning before the Falcons blew the game open with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning off of six hits and one Raider error. In the inning, Tyler Wasserman (bunt single), David Barkholz (double), and Jeff Warnock (single) all collected RBI hits to drive in three of the five runs.
Pitcher Dino Cowell made just his third appearance for the Falcons this season and pitched well, lasting two innings in relief of Oestrike, allowing two hits, one run, two walks and one strikeout. Burke Badenhop pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth inning (one hit, no runs, two strikeouts) while Neil Schmitz got three groundouts to third baseman Wasserman to seal the win in the ninth inning.
Warnock, batting leadoff and playing center field for the first time in his career, went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Hunt, Raszka and Sobol all collected two hits.
BGSU improves to 11-13 overall and have won seven of its last nine games. WSU falls to 11-22. BGSU had double-figure hits for the fourth-straight game, collecting 17 hits against Wright State.
The Falcons return to Mid-American Conference action this weekend when they travel to DeKalb, Ill. for a four-game series against Northern Illinois. The series begins Friday, April 18 at 4 p.m. EST with one nine-inning game. There is a doubleheader scheduled for 2 p.m. EST on Saturday and one game on Sunday at 2 p.m.
