BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team swept the doubles point, then won five of the six singles matches for a 6-1 win over the University at Buffalo Saturday afternoon (April 19) at Keefe Courts. The win was the Falcons' fourth-straight Mid-American Conference victory to close the regular season.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 10-10 on the season, and finish the regular season with a 5-4 record in MAC action. The win clinched outright possession of fifth place in the MAC standings for the Falcons, picked to finish seventh in the league's preseason coaches poll. Buffalo drops to 6-13 and 0-9, respectively.
The four-match win streak in MAC action is the Falcons' first in nearly two decades, since BG won the last three MAC matches in 1982-83 and the opening league contest in 1983-84.
BGSU's win, the Falcons' 10th of the year, enabled the team to double the win total from last season. The 2001-02 Falcons finished with a 5-18 mark in dual-match play.
For the second time in as many days, but only the sixth time in 20 dual matches this season, the Falcons won the doubles point to start the match. BGSU won all three doubles flights for the fourth time this year and the first time in MAC play.
Junior co-captain Lisa Maloney teamed with sophomore Susie Schoenberger for an 8-0 win at the top doubles flight. Alyson Gabel, the Falcons' lone senior, combined with junior Gaby Coello for an 8-4 win at the second flight, while BGSU's two freshmen, Heidi Romer and Andrea Meister, won an 8-1 contest at the third level.
In singles action, the Falcons won at each of the top-five flights. Schoenberger lost only five total games in her win over UB's Karen Maynard at the top flight.
Gabel, playing in the final home match of her collegiate career, topped Kristen Ortman by identical 6-4 scores at the second level. Coello led Michelle Kollarova early in the opening set of their match at the third flight when Kollarova was forced to retire due to injury.
Sophomore Cameron Benjamin recorded a dominant win over the Bulls' Erica Zielinski, losing a total of only one game in the two sets of their fourth-flight match. Junior Jessica Johnson lost only three total games in downing Lisa Wittman at the fifth flight.
Buffalo's lone point came at the sixth flight, where the Bulls' Wendy Rose topped sophomore Lindsey Mix by scores of 7-5 and 6-3.
The Falcons have earned a first-round bye for the MAC Championships, and the BGSU's next action will come in the quarterfinal round on Friday (April 25). BGSU, the fifth seed for the 10-team tournament, will face fourth-seeded Northern Illinois.
